For lunch, we ate traditional Bavarian food at Oma's Kochtopf. Matt ordered sauerbraten (tender roast) in beef sauce. This is considered Swabian sauerbraten (served in Bavaria), whereas sauerbraten served in other regions is apparently sweet and made with raisins. I ordered Maltaschen- shaped like ravioli, filled with spinach and pork, and served with mushroom sauce. Both of our lunches were really good!

The striking red sandstone Johannisburg Palace was built from 1605-1614 and served as the residence of Mainz archbishops until 1803.

The 14th century keep (yellow tower) came from the medieval castle that originally stood here and is considered one of the most important examples of German palace architecture from the Renaissance era.

The palace houses a variety of paintings and artifacts, as well as the world's largest collection of architectural cork models.

The Pompeiianum, located in the Johannisburg Palace Garden and inspired by excavations in Pompeii, was commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria from 1840-1848.

The Roman marble sculptures are among the most valuable exhibits in the Pompeiianum.

From the palace, we walked back along the Main river to the Altstadt. Mutterguttespfarrkirche was built in the 12th century and is the oldest parish church in town.

The beautiful fresco seen on the ceiling dates back to the 1960s during a restoration period.

Stiftskirche (Church of St. Peter and St. Alexander) was also built in the 12th century and is known for its impressive collection of artwork.

Lamentation by Matthias Grunewald

Next stop, Schöntal Park, built in 1780.

After we walked around the park a bit, we spread out our blanket and read/rested for about an hour. A great end to the weekend!
