Cuckoo-Cuckoo

On the way home from Switzerland, we stopped in Triberg for lunch and planned to buy a Cuckoo clock. There are so many different kinds to choose from, it is pretty overwhelming. We ended up going with a woodcutter's house with little red shutters and 3 weights (pine cones)- one each for the Cuckoo, dancing children on the balcony/woodcutter chopping with music (plays a version of the song "Edelweiss"), and the clock. Because the weights are small, we have to reset the clock each week by pulling on opposing chains to bring the weights back up to the house.

The newest addition to our home...a Kuckuck Uhr (Cuckoo Clock) from the Black Forest!

Lauterbrunnen et al.

September 11-13, 2008

We arrived in Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland and drove straight to our cabin at Jungfrau campsite. Our cabin had one bathroom, two bedrooms, and a livingroom/kitchen/dining room. It was cozy and fun...for the Anderson's reading this blog, it reminded me of Aunt Mildred's Clear Lake Cabin.

Beautiful...

This river ran right next to our campsite. It is presumably run-off water from the mountains and waterfalls in this area, so one would imagine that it would be clear-blue water. Instead, the water was very cloudy-white...any thoughts?

Harold and Diane on a mountain train

Funny Story: Instead of riding the train with Harold and Diane, Matt and I decided to do a hike described in our guidebook as "easy" and "family friendly." After hiking straight uphill for about 15 minutes (imagine climbing on a Stairmaster with rocks for pedals while wearing jeans) and several nagging comments from me ("this doesn't seem right" and "there is no way Rick Steves would recommend this hike for children"), we began to hear bells and soon reached a herd of cows grazing on the side of the mountain. At this point, we conceded that we had taken a wrong turn and proceeded to run down the mountain to catch the next train.

Walking around Murren...If you recall, we visited Murren (as well as Luzern and Interlaken) last winter when Kevin came to visit, so it was fun to see the same places in a different season.

A little inspiration for any of you who are wondering what to serve at your next brunch...Apline Hashbrowns with cheese, ham, and pears...yum!

On the way up to Shilthorn- a 10,000-foot summit

Matt, Diane, and Harold in front of the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant- Apparently this was a secret hideout in the Bond movie, "In Her Majesty's Service."

Outside of Interlaken

Switzerland is such a beautiful country and we are so happy that our parents were able to experience it! Looking forward to the next Thoreson visit...perhaps next year?

Ledo's Pizza in Deutschland

Thanks to a special sauce delivery from Matt and Melanie's expert dough-rolling skills, we were all able to enjoy the closest thing to Ledo's pizza on this side of the Atlantic...

Neuschwanstein Castle

Septmber 7, 2008

We stayed at Romantic Pension Albrecht in Hohenschwangau.

To our surprise, all four of us were put in the same hotel room! It was a pretty laughable situation, but in my opinion, the view from our room more than made up for it...

Although it was a rainy day, we forged ahead and saw the famous castle...

Second visit to the castle and counting...

On our drive back home, we decided to look for a place to eat lunch. By pure luck, we came across a local fest serving brats, baked potatoes, homeade apfel schorle, as well as apple and plum cake...I forget, which one did you like better, Harold?

We're not in Iowa anymore...
