Napier, New Zealand

Napier is a pretty port town with an interesting history.  In 1931, it was struck by a devastating earthquake that made rubble of the city and took many lives.  Many injuries were caused by pieces of buildings falling on top of people.  In response, the town rebuild with nearly flat building fronts, and decorating in the art deco fashion.  We're talking art deco to the extreme, but neat.  Many of the buildings have awnings now.

Fountain right on the beach front.

A "Christmas tree" as nicknamed by New Zealanders.  It will keep changing to red over the summer.  It was the beginning of summer while we were there, being in the southern hemisphere.

The Masonic building.

View of the town and the Public Trust Building.

Municiple Theater.

This old car is sitting in a pretty pedestrian area.
